Kenya School of Government functions, courses, services and campuses

Kenya School of Government (KSG) is a corporation established under Act No. 9 of 2012 (KENYA SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT). It is the successor to the Kenya Institute of Administration and the Kenya Development Learning Centre, under the Ministry of Public Service.

The main mandate and function of KSG is to provide learning and development programs to capacity-build public officers in different aspects of management and operations of governments.

Functions of the Kenya School of Government

  1. The School shall provide learning and development programmes to build
  2. capacity for the Public Service.
  3. Provide training, consultancy, and research services designed to inform public policy, promote national development, and standards of competence, and integrity in the Public Service
  4. Promote continuous learning for public service excellence.
  5. Provide programmes that promote a culture of decency, honesty, hard work, transparency, and accountability among public servants
  6. Facilitate the establishment of professional networks and think tanks to develop and grow public sector leaders.
  7. Develop linkages and collaborations with institutions of learning, professional organizations, private sector schools of government, and other similar institutions across the world.
  8. Monitor, evaluate, and communicate the impact of strengthened education and training programmes for national leadership and management.
  9. Develop and deliver programmes tailored to promote the School’s mandate and clients’ needs.
  10. Conduct examinations and award diplomas and other forms of suitable awards to successful candidates.
  11. Do any other thing necessary, or expedient for the discharge of its functions under the Act.

Service offered by KSG

From the functions outlined by the Act, the school has come up with the following services that they offer to achieve their mandate.

  1. Training: This is their main mandate. They majorly on training leadership and management to promote professionalism and improve public service delivery.
  2. Consultancy: The school offers consultancy services in areas such as the development of strategic planning, board inductions, organization re-engineering, and collective bargaining among other services.
  3. Policy advisory: KSG offers policy advisory to government parastatals, corporations, and agencies including the county government.
  4. Research and outreach: The school carries out research related to government operations and policies which can be used to advise the government.
  5. Conferencing and accommodation: This is an extra service that they offer within their campuses for those who are onsite classes or conferences.

School of Government offers a variety of courses from diplomas to short courses mostly in management and supervisor. The list below is mostly for courses that take long periods and not short courses. Senior Management CourseMiddle-level management roles and have undertaken the Management Course or Supervisory Skills Course Job Group K and above or equivalent
Target Group:
Officers responsible for managing resources in their organizations and are in ‘JG’ K and above in the public sector or its equivalent in the private sector.
Strategic Leadership Development ProgramParticipants should be in policy-making and leadership roles and have undertaken the Senior Management Course.
Target Group: This program targets senior officers in Job group “N” and above in the public sector and their equivalents in the private sector.
Project Planning and ManagementA Bachelors Degree (KNQF Level 7) in any relevant discipline is recommended or officers with a diploma or certificate from a recognized institution and a minimum of 3 years of working experience on projects may be considered.
Agricultural Policy Formulation & Legislative Drafting CourseA Bachelor’s degree (KNQF Level 7) or a Diploma (KNQF Level 6) or equivalent qualifications as recognized by the KNQA with at least three (3) years’ work experience in public policy formulation and analysis or Job Group P or equivalent in other sectors
Target Group: The Program targets mid-level and senior officers involved in management or policy-making in Kenya’s public service at the National and County Governments
Project Development and ManagementBachelor’s Degree (KNQF Level 7) or Diploma (KNQF Level 6)/ Certificate (KNQF Level 5) with at least 3 years of work experience in project management
Records Management CourseKCSE Mean Grade D+ and above and passed a proficiency examination
Public Sector Finance ManagementThe Program Targets Officers and Managers involved in Public Finance Management. These include; Finance Officers, Planning officers, Monitoring and Evaluation Officers, Procurement Officers, Accountants, and Auditors in Job Group L and above.
Course In Management Of Public EnterpriseA recognized Bachelors degree (KNQF Level 7) will be a prerequisite for admission to the program.
Leadership Course for National TransformationThis program is specially designed for senior public or private sector officials in or aspiring to hold high-level leadership positions in the public, private, and international civil service sectors. Prospective participants in the program should have at least a Bachelor’s degree (KNQF Level 7) from a recognized institution.
Management Skills CourseThe participants enrolled in this course should have at least three (3) years of work experience
