KSTVET course requirements and fees

The Kenya School of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (KSTVET) is established and given its mandate by KSTVET Legal notice no.123 of 2022 to coordinate and train trainers in the TVET education sector.

It is the former Kenya Technical Trainers College (KTTC) which offered trainer training courses and other diplomas, craft and artisan that are not education-related.

Brief History of KTTC to KSTVET

The school was established in 1976 in collaboration with the Kenyan and Canadian governments. The Canadian funded the infrastructure and built a world-class institution.  

When it was established the institute was mandated to train trainers in in secondary and tertiary institutions.

After the enactment of the TVET Act in 2013 the school was given the mandate of a National Polytechnic under the KTTC status. Then later in 2022, it was now changed to KSTVET. 

The school has expanded its mandate in the proposed TVET bill 2024, which is yet to be passed by parliament to train trainers in the TVET sector.

Functions of KSTVET 

  1. Provide, directly or in collaboration with other institutions of higher learning, training for trainers
  2. To participate in technological development and innovation in economic, social, cultural, scientific and technological disciplines
  3. To contribute to Kenya’s industrial and technological development in collaboration with industry and other organizations through technology transfer.
  4. Undertake research and community service
  5. Provide a multi-level system of post-training programmes relevant to the needs of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector covering a wide range of fields with provision for recognition of prior learning and flexibility of transition between programmes.
  6. Conduct examinations and grant such academic awards as provided for under the Order.
  7. Collaborate with recognized universities to offer programmes leading to the award of an undergraduate degree in technical and vocational education and training.

KSTVET Fees structure

The KSTVET offers its courses in a blended method where they integrate face-to-face and online learning. The fees vary per term depending on whether you are in the face-to-face or online. 

For a diploma in teacher trainer, the fee is Kshs 98,900 for both regular and school-based learning.

Certificate in instructor training for those teaching in Technical vocational centers or youth polytechnics the fees in Kshs. 67,611.

Please note that the fee doesn’t include hostel and upkeep which should be catered separately.

Diploma courses, run for 3 terms, and supervised teaching practice in a TVET institution. While for instructor course runs for 2 terms and teaching practice. For further breakdown, you can visit the KSTVET website.

How to apply for a course?

The school has embraced technology and all their application are done online through their portal. To apply visit the KSTVET Online course application portal. Fill in and upload the necessary documents. Ensure you have scanned certificates for uploading.

After the application is processed then you will be informed through the same portal. To check for the application status open the portal and use your national ID as the username and password.

Hostel booking at the school

The school offers hostels for both males and females on a first-come-first basis. The booking is done online through the student portal. You are advised not to pay for the hostel before confirming the availability of the room.
